Module 1: Validity & Reliability: Why They Make or Break Assessments (60 mins) Purpose: Understand the need for attending to these critical aspects of all assessment tools, whether analyzing existing assessments or creating them scratch. Without reliable assessments and the ability to make valid assumptions from the results, data analysis and decision-making is largely a waste of time. |
Module 2: Selection-Type Items (60 mins) Purpose: Identify the characteristics of and best uses for high quality multiple choice, matching and true-false items. Item writing skills are not a typical part of educators’ background training, but high stakes assessments require using the best assessments possible. |
Module 3: Constructed Response Items (60 mins) Purpose: Identify the characteristics of and best uses for high quality open response, open-ended and performance based items. Item writing skills are not a typical part of educators’ background training, but high stakes assessments require using the best assessments possible. |
Module 4: Using the Good Items You Already Have (60 mins) Purpose: Critique existing items and assessments used; cull out high quality items; rework others if possible; discard all others. Being able to cull out the best assessments you already have increases good data use and reduces the need to start completely from scratch with assessment development. |
Module 5: Creating the Exact Assessments You Want and Need (60 mins) Purpose: Create high quality selection-type and constructed response items from scratch. Being able to apply the characteristics of high quality items, and to target your assessments to gather the data you need most, streamlines the development-use-analysis-report cycle. |
Module 6: The Power of Well Constructed Scoring Guides (60 mins) Purpose: Critique existing and create high quality scoring guides/rubrics from scratch. High quality scoring guides provide another lens through which to measure student knowledge, skills and conceptual understanding. |
Module 7: Strategies for Streamlining and Simplifying Data Analysis (60 mins)
Purpose: Choose the most relevant data sources, simplify the analysis process, and succinctly and clearly report data. Choosing the most useful and reliable data – and knowing which data doesn’t provide useful information – streamlines and strengthens decision-making. |
